Vinessum - the location
Antico Convento San Francesco
Via Luigi Cadorna, 14 | 48012 Bagnacavallo (RA) ITALY
The place where Vinessum 2018 takes place is Bagnacavallo, a Municipality of Emilia Romagna in the province of Ravenna. Its name has been mentioned since the tenth century and recalls the presence of a ford of the Senio river near the first urban agglomeration, to cross which it was necessary to wet the mounts. In medieval times Bagnacavallo was an important center of exchange between Ravenna and Ferrara.
There was a marsh harbor that the inhabitants used as a place to exchange goods, including ... wine.
Bagnacavallo has a well preserved medieval town center. In addition to numerous palaces, mostly 17th and 18th century, one of the most characteristic buildings is the historic elliptical Piazza Nuova surrounded by a portico - home to butchers, fishmongers and various shops - where from 1758 it was common to sell and exchange goods. The Castellaccio is instead the oldest building, built by local lords in the fifteenth century, while on the central square of the village, Piazza della Libertà, overlook the archpriest church, the eighteenth century Palazzo Comunale, the Goldoni Theater and the Civic Tower (ancient seat of prisons, where the famous "Passatore" was imprisoned in 1849).
In Bagnacavallo there is also an ancient farm of about six hectares, the Podere Pantaleone, transformed in 1987 into a naturalistic oasis of great landscape interest, testimony of the old Romagna countryside, where today flowers and animals flourish elsewhere in the plain.
The headquarters of Vinessum 2018 is the Ancient Convent of San Francesco - a structure that dates back to the mid-1200s as one of the first convents arisen after the death of Saint Francis. Considering that the first convents were built in places of great passage, we can hypothesize that Bagnacavallo was therefore an important road junction.
Over the centuries the complex underwent various renovations and in the Napoleonic era the building largely became public property.
